Triathlon- what type of wetsuit?

The water temperature is estimated to be between 68-72 degrees- I have a full wetsuit that I wear for waterskiing- I think it’s 3MM- not quite sure though.

Will I be too hot? Should I get a shortie instead?

That wetsuit is not really designed for swimming just keeping you warm. The best would be QR wetsuite. Easy to get off for fast transitions and good mobility for swimming. Do not buy one unless you are going to get serious about Tri’s.

A lot of people actually swim slower in a non-triathlon wetsuit than in just a swimsuit. The neoprene in the shoulders and other critical areas inhibits movement, and if you don’t have really good seals at the neck and wrist you take on water which slows you down.

Swimming specific wet suits have thinner material in critical spots which is more flexible, and design features that make them easier to get on and off, and water-tight neck and wrist seals. Chafing is also an issue, and cheaper ones will eat your neck.

That said, you better be ready to pay $200-300 for a good one.

Have you swum any significant distance in your waterskiing suit? that should tell you more than anything. Have you worked on your open water navigation? that’s also really important.

That temperature of water shouldn’t require a wetsuit, even a 3mm one. I would invest in a good quality dive skin, that is usually made from heavy-duty nylon/spandex and will add plenty of warmth. You’ll be swimming pretty hard so generating tons of body heat.

Some triathlons may not allow a neoprene wetsuit in any case. Make sure you read their rules & regs. Anything that gives you extra bouyancy might be against the rules.

There are specifically made triathlon suits available, too, though they tend to be pretty pricey. If there is a specialty running shop or big sporting goods store in your area you should check on that.

Depends on the distance of the swim. If this is your first triathlon and it’s a sprint, it should be fine. It will provide you with additional buoyancy if you need to stop and rest during the swim. You will see all kinds of wetsuits at the start, just as you’ll see all kinds of bikes for those giving it their first tri. Don’t be intimidated and if you get hooked then you can invest in a triathlon wetsuit. If you’re not comfortable with your current wetsuit and want to use a triathlon wetsuit, I suggest looking to borrow one or check out ebay for a used triathlon wetsuit before you spend a lot. Sizing is important, Triathlon Wetsuits should be snug and each brand has different sizing charts and not all are the same, for example Orca’s tend to run small. There are several brands but at the entry level all are somewhat similar in material. Good luck and have fun.
